name

Rural Medical Clinic, Rural Island. Lake Victoria. Kenya. For Nursing, medical volunteers.

(Mobile clinic), located in Suba District, Nyanza Province in western Kenya. The approximately 15km long by 6km wide island is home to about 37,000 people whose economic mainstay is fishing. The clinic has served the wider Suba area for more than 15 years.  Faced with problems such as lack of drugs and basic medical equipment, the clinic strives to put a smile on the islanders’ faces every day without end, faces that not only reflect charm and admirable hospitality, but also the topographical beauty around them.  The island is endowed with thickets of African indigenous trees, black sand beaches with clear to the bottom shores and blue skies. The island has a dramatic landscape that teams up with the sun to give breathtaking sunrise and sundown vistas that give way to a therapeutic opportunity for reflections or a simple marvel at Mother Nature.

place

Small clinic with 1 doctor and 1 assistant. Serving approx 10-15 patients a day, covering a population of 37,000. You would work 9-5, Mon - Fri. The clinic has a boat to offer a mobile clinic service to other isolated islands. Additionally the clinic offers community work, the island is hilly, so be prepared to  get on foot to climb the uneven terrain. you will be most welcomed by any of the patients including community, it is n immensely satisfying experience. You can achieve as much as you aspire to, from managing the clinic, or assisting, it is fully hands on. day to day duties depending on level of expertise would include, iimplementing national health screening programs, family planning objectives, local & national health promotion, health education, emergency medicine, minor surgery, diagnosis and treatment of patients (mainly tropical diseases), but does include all variations of medical, urology, obstetrics and gynaecology, gastrology, ENT, and paediatrics. many patients have the secondary complication of HIV/AIDS which has a  prevalence rate of up to 40% To diagnose diseases microscope and slides are used, so development of laboratory would be a great help.

would suit

Experienced travellers or mature people who seek a genuine rural Kenyan experience. Life is slow here! The island has no running water, little electric and very basic shops. No entertainment. The clinic prefers people with some deep interest in nursing or is from the medical  profession, including students. The doctor would offer as huge amount of training and guidance as it is such a small clinic.

acommodation

Small hotel close to clinic on the beach. You would have your washing, food and everything else taken care of by you own assistant. All food, water is catered for. Either your own cook or eat at the 'local' restaurant.

our view

This is a great adventure for someone looking to live in with a Kenyan island community. If you are looking to spend money on a community that the Kenya government has forgotten about this could be ideal. The people are extremely welcoming and the landscape, beaches and islands are beautiful. It is however remote so the evenings would be spent chatting to locals or reading as their is no entertainment as such. The mobile clinic is a wonderful opportunity to visit some of the remotest tribes in Africa and help with medical treatment. But remember, if you want toilets that flush and shops, this is not for you.

This project is a great opportunity to fundraise before you arrive, the needs of the growing population and AIDS pandemic are immense and any type of medical supplies would be greatly appreciated. Drugs are cheaper bought in Kenya, and if you so wish to purchase we can advise you.

local activities

Access to a deserted white sand beach. We can take you to Ruma National park. ( 1 day ) or a Safari to the Masia Mara ( 2 or 3 night ). Swimming, walking, cycling. Nearest town - Mbita, 1.5 hours by boat. Nearest ATM, hotels and banks - Homa bay, 3 hrs. Boat and bus.
