project

Misori Primary School. Mfangano Island. Lake Victoria. Kenya. Rural and isolated school for 280-300 pupils. 30% of whom are orphans. This school is not sponsored at present.

details

This Primary school teaches pupils up to the age of 15. Like most Primary schools in Kenya, despite the teachers being government paid the lack of numbers means almost everyday children sit alone in classrooms.

The School is in a beautiful location nestled upon a hill looking over lake Victoria. Although this sounds good the school has no running water and with pupils walking for miles, then climbing a hill to get to school they often suffer from dehydration. As for equipment the schools resources are scarce. All pupils have to share text books with a least 3 others. The school is not painted and the classrooms and steps are dangerous where the concrete has eroded away. Teaching is a challenge in these environments as the teachers have no visual aids. Just chalk and a blackboard. The pupils are extremely keen on learning and are totally attentive in class as they know the importance that education has on their future prosperity.

The school has come a long way in recent months and has benefited from solar electric lights in the classrooms as well as new benches and a quantity of textbooks for the older pupils. You will see from the pictures (all taken recently) that there is still much to do.

Every few months we will nominate a new project to raise funds for. Often they will be placements of ours in Kenya that could do with some financial help. Others will be ones we come across on our travels.

Once we have raised enough money through donations to carry out a task we will photograph and publish the pictures here to show the results.

If you wish to donate a quantity of money for something specific please email us and the beneficiaries always like to know who's giving. School children in particular like to send thank you letters to individuals or groups that help.

All pictures on this site are from actual placements or volunteer pictures from Kenya.
